Early Spring Blooms Update
In the fall I put in the hard work of burying bulbs and starting and planting cool hardy annuals. The ranunculus and anemone are looking really great. On the warmer winter days I’ve lifted the frost cloth and plastic to take a peek and provide some fresh air. When I started them in the fall I soaked the tiny tubers and corms and then planted them in trays to provide a head start before moving them outside under low tunnels. The hundreds and hundred of specialty tulips and daffodils are starting to show early growth. With these I’m talking the gorgeous double blooming types that you don’t often find in the grocery store. Also under low tunnels are the cool hardy annuals I started in the fall. Their little roots will provide a well established foundation to support early and strong flower growth, well before any of my winter started seedlings. And finally, I may be able to harvest peony for market this year. I’m supposed to wait until year four before heavily harvesting but to be honest, I may not be able to pass the marshmallow test!
